A fantastic part of each Athena Executive Club meeting is the Networking Skills Training. These are short sessions aimed at providing quick tips and techniques for members and visitors to maximise their networking activities.

In February, Gina gave some Twitter tips to get you started on this incredibly powerful social media platform.

Twitter is great for:

  • Safety alerts in crisis situations (hurricanes etc)
  • Industry news
  • Broadcasting in real time
  • Soliciting feedback
  • Sharing opinions

If Facebook is a walled garden [i.e. inbound], Twitter is open with unlimited reach [outbound]

Twitter basics:

  • Set up is easy
  • Include a 160 word bio
  • Decide if you are on Twitter as you or your business (either is fine but always be a person, not a logo)

Search and follow:

  • Industry peers
  • Thought leaders
  • Experts
  • Personalities

Gain followers by:

  • Building your profile as an expert
  • Sharing experiences and inspiration
  • Having fun and being yourself
  • Using @ to tag someone
  • Using # – hashtag to tag a topic and make it searchable
  • RT = retweeting to share someone’s tweet to your followers
